NAME OF CLINICAL TRIAL/STUDY:
Metabolomic Signatures in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
TRIAL UPDATES:
May 2009
According to investigator Merit Cudkowicz, this study has led to a subsequent study to build an ALS respository of DNA, plasma and cerebrospinal fluid. See Biomarkers: Multicenter Study for Validation in ALS. The results of this first study remain under analysis.PURPOSE AND RATIONALE:
The purpose of the study is to compare biological markers in the blood of subjects with and without amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Specifically, we are looking for differences between the blood of subjects with ALS and those with other disorders, including peripheral nervous system diseases, inflammatory myopathies (inflammatory muscle diseases), and Alzheimer’s disease. Samples will also be compared with those from healthy subjects (controls).
STUDY DETAILS:
Participants, who will consist of 100 people with ALS, 50 with inflammatory myopathies, 50 with a disease of the peripheral nerves, 100 with Alzheimer’s disease, and 100 healthy controls, will be asked to give a blood sample.
All blood samples must be drawn at Massachusetts General Hospital.
OPENING DATES:
Apr 15 2004
TARGET NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS:
400
RECRUITMENT STATUS:
Closed
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
Participants must have
- a clinical diagnosis of ALS, Alzheimer’s disease, an inflammatory myopathy or a peripheral nerve disease, or be free of any neurological disease (a healthy control).
- be a man or woman 20 years old or older
- be willing and able to give consent for the study
