Muscular Dystrophy Association Efforts to Combat Duchenne Muscular DystrophyThe Muscular Dystrophy Association was founded in 1950, a time when very little was known about Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Since then MDA has been the world's leader in neuromuscular disease research. Among the many landmark breakthroughs credited to MDA-funded scientists is the identification of the gene that, when defective, causes Duchenne muscular dystrophy, as well as a milder form of the disorder, known as Becker muscular dystrophy. MDA is sponsoring cutting-edge research aimed at using this knowledge to develop an effective treatment or cure. In addition to sponsoring worldwide research, MDA offers a comprehensive program of services for those affected by neuromuscular disease, including a nationwide network of outpatient clinics, physical and occupational therapy consultations, support groups, week-long summer camping sessions and more. For additional information about Duchenne muscular dystrophy and MDA's activities relating to the disorder, contact the your local MDA office (in your local telephone directory) or call MDA's National Headquarters at 1-800-572-1717. If you have additional questions about school management of students with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, call your local special education coordinator or school nurse. Publication and distribution of this booklet were made possible by the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Special thanks to the Spencer Foundation for its initial support in developing A Teacher's Guide to Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. |
