Historic Television

The first incarnation of the MDA Telethon was in the guise of a series of specials produced in the 1950s, some featuring Lewis with partner Dean Martin. Even after the trauma of the Martin and Lewis breakup in 1956, Lewis remained committed to helping MDA and finding new ways to garner support for its cause.

It wasn't until 1966 that everything fell together to allow MDA's first national Telethon to be produced. It was hosted by Lewis and broadcast by one station in New York; it raised just over $1 million.

Today, there are some 200 "Love Network" stations that broadcast the Telethon in cities across the country. Check the Telethon area of MDA's Web site for information about station and viewing times in your area.

Everyone has a favorite moment from the Telethon, whether it's a Frank Sinatra performance, a great rock number from John Lennon, Led Zeppelin or Michael Jackson, or a classic bit of song-and-dance teamwork between Lewis and his close friend Sammy Davis Jr.

Certainly one of the most unforgettable moments occurred on the 1976 broadcast when Sinatra brought Lewis' estranged partner, Dean Martin, onstage for an impromptu reunion. The comedy duo had barely spoken for 20 years. The surprise embrace Lewis received from his old friend provided one of the most touching moments in the Telethon's remarkable history.

A Celebration to Come

For Lewis and many loyal Telethon viewers, the most important stars on the Telethon aren't necessarily household names.

They're the families fighting neuromuscular diseases who come to share their stories on the Telethon and the scientists who report on progress in the quest for treatments and cures.

This year, among the families who'll be appearing live with Lewis and his co-hosts will be that of 9-year-old Lauren Carter from Oceanside, Calif. Lauren has spinal muscular atrophy and is serving as MDA's 2000 National Goodwill Ambassador.

Along with her parents, Ken and Traci, and her younger brother, Dalton, Lauren has been traveling the country, speaking to people about the importance of supporting MDA.

"She's doing a fabulous job," says Lewis of his youngest national volunteer. Lewis will be pleased if he meets his goal of one additional dollar in pledges raised, but he says he'll save the real celebration for the day when effective treatments and cures are developed to defeat neuromuscular diseases once and for all.

"We're getting closer," he says. "What with stem cells and gene therapy and so many other kinds of exciting research possibilities, it's just a matter of time.

"The more people who watch the Telethon and make a pledge to support the research, the sooner we'll be able to make it happen."  .
