Edith retired from the California Mental Health Department as a psychiatric technician in 1982.  Soon after she began painting and exhibited her works in many juried art shows and local galleries in the Payson, Ariz., area where she lived for several years.  Edith was also a published writer of poetry and short stories.

Brent specialized in portraits of animals and for several years had his own business, "Pastels by Brent."  Unfortunately, in recent years he was not able to paint due to diminished abilities.  After earning an associate’s degree in CAD Engineering, he worked as a tool designer for more than 10 years.

David received a bachelor’s degree from Western Illinois University and taught junior high school art for 13 years.  Prior to his retirement he designed layouts for landscape projects.  David hasn’t painted for several years, but after receiving the diagnosis of ALS, he resumed painting his favorite subjects, landscapes.

After a 30-year career as an attorney, Charles turned his hobby of photography into a profession.  Well known in Colorado as a scenic photographer, he and his wife worked as a team.  Charles’ photos have been featured on postcards, calendars, greeting cards and magazines.

My Dad and I

Dottie began creating artwork in junior high school, particularly painting people with the hope of becoming a dress designer.  She later designed and sewed many of her daughter’s clothes, including her wedding dress.  Other hobbies she enjoyed were crocheting, beading and tole painting.  With her arm strength weakening after a diagnosis of ALS in 1998, Dottie searched for another way to continue creating art and found a computer paint program.  This artwork took more than 72 hours to complete.

My Fathers Tulips

Michael worked as a commercial illustrator for many years, but is now creating fine art.  Some of his works have been exhibited at local shows as well as the Jackson County (Ore.) Courthouse.  This painting is a tribute to Michael’s father who always had a garden which featured beautiful roses and tulips in vivid purples and yellows accented by the green stems.

Mystical Peaks

Les became a full-time artist at the age of 50.  Unable to hold a paintbrush, he relied on his acclaimed "drip method" of painting.  By dripping and pouring pools of different colors onto a canvas and maneuvering it with his hands, Les produced amazing patterns and dynamic images.  He shared his love of art by teaching children with disabilities.  Les’ works have been presented in numerous New York and Long Island exhibits.

Luis was an information analyst and enjoyed photography, computer graphics and working in mosaics.  This artwork, originally a photograph taken during a trip to Spain, combines several techniques to achieve the finished product.  Luis was a member of the MDA National Task Force on Public Awareness and received MDA’s Personal Achievement Award for the District of Columbia in 1998 and 2001.

Old Barn

Dan worked for Ford Motor Company for many years.  After receiving a diagnosis of ALS at age 30, he left work and began helping others.  He campaigned for barrier-free buildings, advocated for those with disabilities and became an artist.  Dan created paintings by balancing a paintbrush between his teeth to transform blank canvases into works of art that vary from landscapes to portraits.  In 1993 he received the Michigan State MDA Personal Achievement Award.

Tom retired from teaching at a community college in 2000 and was looking forward to playing and performing music.  Months later he received a diagnosis of ALS and as lost his mobility, beginning with his feet and moving upward, he began making adaptations every step of the way.  Now a quadriplegic, Tom blinks his eyes to communicate and draw on a computer. “Orphan” is a drawing of a child with AIDS from southern Uganda.

Ronald is a self-taught artist whose work has received numerous awards in area art fairs. He artistically captured an early morning scene in Baxter State Park in northwestern Maine.  Ronald is a former member of the Maine Governor’s Committee for Employment of People with Disabilities.  He received the 1997 Maine MDA State Personal Achievement Award.
