
Imagination Station by Mallory Parton Mallory is attending Central Alabama Community College on a full academic scholarship. She is majoring in psychology; however, one of her favorite hobbies is creating colorful and whimsical artwork. Mallory previously donated two other pieces to the MDA Art Collection and now has had five pieces accepted for the Collection. She also has created works which have been used in MDA’s Direct Mail campaigns and for sponsor awards.

In Our Hands by Brian Groh Brian began painting and drawing as a small child. He has won awards for his works at Chaparral High School and the Temecula Rotary Club art exhibits. He also has organized summer art camps for 4-6th graders, instructing them in drawing and painting with acrylics and watercolors. Among his other interests are science classes and soccer. Along with the muscle disease, Brian also has cerebral palsy.

In the Zone by Carlos Serbia Carlos began painting professionally in 2007. He works part-time for the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles. During his teen years, Carlos looked forward to playing baseball professionally. However, weakness in his legs and pain while walking and running led to a diagnosis of BMD. As a child he enjoyed drawing, music and poetry. One of his paintings is used in the packaging of Ocumare Grand dark chocolate produced by Amano.

Inner Landscape San Diego by Diane-Louise Scher Diane graduated from San Jose State University with a degree in fine arts. She began painting while in college, and this artwork was her first effort, created in 1976. She owns a business which sells marine art, ship models and nautical artifices.

Its Not Like Before by Gay Lauritzen-Appleberry Gay received a B.S. degree from Utah State University and an M.A. in Art Education from Brigham Young University. She worked in the film industry for 12 years as an artist and set decorator. This artwork was created when Gay’s neck muscles began to weaken. The bent neck expresses what was happening to her body.

Jerry Lewis by John Gilbert John created this artwork at age 17 while attending Paradise High School, where he served as art editor for the school's literary magazine. He served as the MDA California State Goodwill Ambassador in 1985. Besides drawing by hand for many years, John also created computer artwork and won numerous blue ribbons at county and state fairs.

Little Angels by George Little George has been working in wood sculpture for several years. This piece combines two intricate “Angel” fish mounted on white coral. George enjoys fishing for real fish and also carves and plays wooden Native American flutes. He has donated several of the flutes to people who have respiratory problems or are recovering from a stroke.

Mamacita by Edith Sarraille Edith retired from the California Mental Health Department as a psychiatric technician in 1982. Soon after she began painting and exhibited her works in many juried art shows and local galleries in the Payson, Ariz., area where she lived for several years. Mental Chaos by Mandi Zeiler Ziino Zeenah began drawing and painting as a small child. She had artwork displayed while a student at Columbia High School. She graduated from the University of Montana with a Bachelor of Arts degree. In 2006, Zeenah won an Award of Excellence in a contest sponsored by VSA arts and Volkswagen. She owns her own Web design business.
