
Friends and Heroes by Mallory Parton Mallory has been drawing since she was very young and created this artwork at age 11. She is attending community college on a full scholarship. Besides creating unique works of art, Mallory’s hobbies include knitting, music and computer games. She has six works in the Art Collection.

Frightening Lightning by Blanche Cuba Blanche began drawing and painting as a child. This artwork received a People’s Choice award in a local juried exhibit before she donated it to the MDA Art Collection. Blanche’s hobbies include reading, needlework and music.

From Russia with Love by Lynette Battles A recognized artist, Lynette studied in San Francisco and at the Joslyn Center for the Arts in Torrance, Calif. Many of her works focus on depicting the American prairie. Her award-winning work has appeared in numerous juried shows including the Portland (Oregon) Art Museum; Boise State University; Corbin Art Center (Spokane, Wash.) and the Gallery Genesis, Chicago.

Genesis Zipping up the Rainforest by Edward Friedland Brooklyn-born artist Ed Friedland served as chairman of the Krell Software Corp., a creator and manufacturer of educational computer programs. Formerly a political science faculty member at the University of California, Berkeley and senior staff officer at the National Academy of Sciences, Friedland was the author of numerous works on public affairs.

Giraffes at Sunset by Elsha Stockseth Elsha created this artwork at age 15. She graduated first in her class from Northridge High School in Layton. Elsha is no longer able to paint due to weakness in her arms. Previously, she would lie on her side, using her left arm to support her right arm and hand as she painted.

Girls Weaving by Various Artists This multimedia weaving incorporates ribbons, belts and bows. It was created at an MDA sponsored children's art workshop held in June, 1993, at the Indianapolis Children's Museum.

Gone fishing by Amber Lowenstein-Williams Amber created this artwork at age 15. She graduated from Soldotna High School on Alaska's Kenai Peninsula. Amber is a former State Goodwill Ambassador and received the 1994 MDA Personal Achievement Award for Alaska.

Grand Cayman Archway by Michael Bougher Michael worked as a process control system designer and project manager for several years, but is now creating photo realistic digital paintings. He is virtually a quadriplegic and used a head pointer and a switch near his cheek to finish this artwork. Michael’s interests include astrophysics, quantum mechanics, American history and bird watching.

Greystone Castle by Carl Yeager Carl has been taking photos since 1972. His technique has evolved from traditional film photography processes to using software for cropping, tonal control, color mixing and other effects with scanned images. Although he uses a tracheostomy tube, Carl spends 95 percent of his field time by himself and uses a tripod to keep the camera steady.

Hanging Geranium by Barbara Misheck Barbara received a bachelor of fine arts degree from Kent State University. Her work has been seen in numerous galleries and exhibits nationwide as well as featured on notecards and calendars. Barbara’s book “A Wing and a Prayer: An Artist’s Journey with Muscular Dystrophy” was published in 2007. She was a member of the Ohio Watercolor Society.

Have Wheels will Travel by Katy Hinckley Katy earned a master’s degree in communication from the University of Wyoming. In 2003, she and her sister and their husbands traveled to Las Vegas and spent four days touring the countryside. The painting commemorates that trip. It shows the artist’s “wheels,” those of her Convaid Convertible (a convertible wheelchair/stroller) and their Heritage Softail Classic and Sportster 883 Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

Head Turner by Erin Worsham Erin is a former actress and singer. She uses a computer with special software that allows her to write and create artwork via a sensor taped to her forehead. This artwork reflects physical changes as a result of ALS.

Heaven on a Summer Night by William Ross Bill was a retired high school teacher and author of two plays and a children’s novel. This painting was inspired by Bill’s interest in baseball and memories of attending evening games. He donated two other paintings to the Art Collection.

HMS Bounty by Paul Topkin Paul was a multitalented individual who began building models of famous ships in 1990. The “HMS Bounty” was one of the last ships Paul built before the disease diminished his abilities. Paul recreated the ships’ details after studying their histories and reading their blueprints. Each ship took several months to build. This model, 1/50th of the size of the original British ship, is the 200th piece to be donated to the MDA Art Collection.

House by the River by Sebastian Spreng Sebastian is an internationally-known artist whose work has been exhibited in Argentina, Germany, Venezuela and across the United States. Influenced by literature, mythology and classical music, his works are included in private, public and corporate collections worldwide. Sebastian is also a writer and received the Florida MDA State Personal Achievement Award in 1995.

House in the Sun by Chad Cahill Chad created this artwork at age 9 at an MDA-sponsored children’s art workshop held in Fort Wayne, in November, 1997. He enjoys computer graphics and engineering classes and hopes to major in aerospace engineering in college.

I Have Seen the Future by Gary Spradling This work commemorates a piece Gary created showing himself in a wheelchair and using a ventilator – seven years before his diagnosis of ALS. He received a bachelor’s degree in fine art from Southwest Missouri State University, and a master’s in fine art from the Maryland Institute, College of Art, in Baltimore. Gary began creating paintings and sculptures in high school. His works have been eFxhibited in numerous galleries and museums.
