Down By the Lake

David hobbies included painting, building model cars and miniature houses, as well as creating decorative metalwork.  He was a member of the Bald Eagle Art League.  This painting was featured in the 1996 MDA “Holiday Wishes” card collection.

Ferdinand began painting in 1994 after being diagnosed with myasthenia gravis.  This painting was done from a photograph of Dr. Glass, Director of the MDA/ALS Center at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia.

Dragonflies

Fred painted for over 30 years, but began working on linoleum block images after an ALS diagnosis.  He exhibited block prints in local galleries and shows, and also created digital artwork.  A few years ago, he created butterflies that he e-mailed to contacts all over the world which were then photographed and returned to Fred.  As a result, his work has been seen and photographed on every continent as well as the International Space Station.

Nancy enjoys painting seascapes and portraits and prefers working in pastels.  This artwork is a painting of her son at age two.  Nancy ‘s work has appeared in several juried shows and galleries in Connecticut and Rhode Island.  Her work was also featured in an exclusive exhibit at the Groton Public Library in 1998.

Melecio has a bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy from the University of New Mexico.  He retired after working for over 25 years as a pharmacist.  Melecio became interested in woodworking in junior high school and is a self-taught artist specializing in watercolors.  His works feature northern New Mexico churches and other native scenes and he also creates beautiful wood vessels.

Tommy began creating art in childhood.  He has a bachelor’s degree from the Maryland Institute, College of Art in Baltimore.  He is known in the Baltimore and Washington areas for his exceptional work in pencil as well as other mediums.  Tommy has the ability to capture his subject’s emotion and character.

David began painting as a teenager.  He was self-employed as an entertainment booking agent for local fairs and festivals.  David was also active with MDA fundraisers and the local broadcast of the Jerry Lewis Telethon for many years.  He was the recipient of MDA’s 1992 Personal Achievement Award for Michigan.

Forged Iron Sculpture

Douglas graduated from the Minneapolis College of Art & Design with a bachelor’s degree in Fine Art and a master’s degree from the University of Minnesota.  He taught sculpture and design at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, for many years and also became a blacksmith.  After opening his own forge business in Lesterville, his nickname was “Dr. Iron.”  Douglas received the Robert Ross 2007 MDA Personal Achievement Award for Missouri.

Formerly a pharmacist, Cato has studied art all her life, including stints in Europe and at the Art Students League of Denver.  She now creates commissioned art and other original works in several media.  This painting is a portrait of Cato’s Rottweiler Service Dog, Faust, who assists her by retrieving objects, opening doors, turning lights on and off and performing other tasks.

Since Abbey became MDA National Goodwill Ambassador in 2007, she has created numerous pieces of artwork for the Association’s national sponsors.  One of her works is displayed at the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee, Wis.  This artwork was created in 2010 when Abbey and her parents traveled to Washington, D.C. to tour our nation’s Capitol and visit legislators as well as the headquarters of the IAFF and NALC.
