Ballerina II by Thomas Nelson Tom retired from teaching at a community college in 2000 and was looking forward to playing and performing music. Months later he received a diagnosis of ALS and as he lost his mobility, beginning with his feet and moving upward, he began making adaptations every step of the way. Now a quadriplegic, Tom blinks his eyes to communicate and draw on a computer. “Ballerina 2” is a study of human form, gesture and movement.

Bavarian Reflection by Mario Damiani Mario has been enjoying photography for many years. He graduated from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. and works as a lawyer for the US Department of Labor. This photograph was taken with a Nikon APS camera while Mario was on a trip to Germany in 2000. It’s a photo of the Heilig- Geist-Spital (Hospital of the Holy Spirit) in Nuremberg.

Big Top Smiles by Mallory Parton Mallory is attending Central Alabama Community College on a full academic scholarship. She is majoring in psychology; however, one of her favorite hobbies is creating colorful and whimsical artwork. Mallory previously donated two other pieces to the MDA Art Collection and now has had five pieces accepted for the Collection. She also has created works which have been used in MDA’s Direct Mail campaigns and for sponsor awards.

Blue Spruce by Barbara Misheck Barbara received a bachelor of fine arts degree from Kent State University. Her work has been seen in numerous galleries and exhibits nationwide. Barbara’s book, “A Wing and a Prayer: An Artist’s Journey with Muscular Dystrophy,” was published in 2007. She was a member of the Ohio Watercolor Society. This watercolor was featured in the 1998 MDA “Holiday Wishes” program.

Camp Potawatomi Camp Fire by Nathan Estes Nathan created this artwork at age 9 at an MDA-sponsored children's summer camp. He graduated from Eastern High School with honors and received the American Legion Citizen Award. As a student, Nathan enjoyed science, band, musicals and drama club, and he received numerous blue ribbons and honor awards for his artwork locally and at 4-H exhibits.

Candles and Holly by William Bill Rinaldi Bill was involved in politics for many years and enjoyed painting and writing. His autobiography was published in 2001. In 1993, Bill received the MDA Personal Achievement Award for Pennsylvania. This artwork was featured in the 1997 Holiday Wishes card collection.

Cape May Boat Yard by George Johnson An accomplished artist, George exhibited and sold his artwork in several states. He designed and manufactured a device to support his painting materials, which allowed him to continue painting as his disease progressed. George received the MDA State Personal Achievement Award for West Virginia in 1999.

Carnival by Kenneth Turner Kenneth created artwork for more than 25 years. He taped his paintbrush to his fingers and developed a unique method of painting. Kenneth used Velcro and clamps to hold his paper or canvas onto a lazy Susan which then turned as he painted.

Chief Joseph by Jim Heller Jim worked many years as a commercial artist and had a degree in commercial and illustrative art. In later years he concentrated on portraiture and fine art with western scenes as a main theme. His work appeared in numerous magazines and galleries. Jim enjoyed working in both oils and watercolors, and his paintings and prints are owned by collectors around the world.
